Classroom-Ready Fund Education

Alaska’s Renewable Revenue

APFC and Alaska Resource Education (ARE) have partnered to develop classroom games and lessons that help equip Alaska’s future leaders with an understanding of the Permanent Fund—our state’s largest renewable financial resource. Alaska demonstrated foresight by converting its nonrenewable oil, gas, and mineral wealth into a lasting financial asset. Through disciplined saving and investing, the Fund’s earnings today contribute to essential state services and support the annual Permanent Fund Dividend.

Standards-aligned materials for understanding the Fund

About the Curriculum

"Alaska’s Renewable Revenue" curriculum was created to teach and empower Alaska’s youth about the existence and purpose of APFC and the Fund, financial literacy, the Fund’s structure, investment management, and how the Fund is used to convert non-renewable mineral resources into a renewable economic resource.

The curriculum consists of three interactive games designed to help students understand personal finance, the Alaska Permanent Fund’s role in the state, and how diversification supports stability and long-term returns. Aligned with state standards in Math, Science, Government, and History, these engaging lessons provide high school students with a foundational understanding of Alaska’s economic future while building practical financial literacy skills.

GAME 1: CREATE-A-STATE GAME

Students explore how Alaska became a state through its natural resources and consider ways to transform nonrenewable resources into a renewable resource.

GAME 2: RENEWABLE FINANCIAL RESOURCE

Students examine how the Alaska Permanent Fund is managed as a renewable financial resource that supports the state and future generations.

GAME 3: FUND SIMULATION

Students role-play decision making for the Permanent Fund, balancing current needs with long-term growth to responsibly benefit Alaskans today and tomorrow.
